West Point Dam Road to be closed November 18-22

Published Nov. 13, 2013

MOBILE, Ala.-- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District announced that the roadway on top of West Point Dam will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians during the week of November 18-22, 2013.  Motorists use the road in their daily commutes across the Chattahoochee River, and the closure may add to their travel time.  Signs located at each end of the road are in place to notify the public of its accessibility. Alternate routes across the river are the US Highway 29 Bridge in West Point, Ga., and the Georgia Highway 109 Bridge west of LaGrange, Ga.

The roadway will be closed while a large crane is used on the dam to lift heavy steel bulkheads and position them in front of the spillway gates.  The bulkheads are called "stop logs", and they stack on top of each other to create a sealed barrier between the spillway gate and the reservoir so that workers can inspect and perform maintenance on the gates when needed.  The stop logs were fabricated using funds made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
