MOBILE, Ala. – The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, at West Point Project announces the annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD) event to be held Sept. 30 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Holiday Campground. The event is the Nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands.

The public is invited to celebrate this special day by volunteering in a number of projects to benefit the resources of West Point Lake.

This year’s event will focus on projects such as shoreline clean-up, construction of wood duck and blue bird nesting boxes and fish habitat structures.

West Point Lake has 525 miles of shoreline, 26,000 acres of water and more than 30,000 acres of public land. It is home to several species of fish, birds and other wildlife. These volunteer activities will greatly benefit their environment and build awareness of the natural resources for the volunteers who participate in this event.

Volunteers who pre-register are eligible for two nights of free camping. This event is an activity in which the entire family can participate. Mobile District encourages individuals, families and large groups to volunteer, then relax and enjoy themselves at the beautiful campsites located in Holiday campground on Friday and Saturday nights, Sept. 29 and 30.

Volunteers will receive a free lunch at Holiday Campground. In addition, the Chattahoochee Riverkeepers will give the volunteers free boat rides on their floating classroom "Miss Sally." Lunch and boat rides both begin at 11 a.m.

Individuals and groups may register by contacting the West Point Project Office at (706) 645-2937 or by emailing west_point_lake@usace.army.mil. Registration closes on Sept.16.
