MOBILE, Ala. – On Thursday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, West Point Lake Project kicked off its 44th annual "Special Day for Special People" event. West Point Lake project staff set aside the day for mentally and physically challenged individuals of all ages in the local community.
Over 800 people showed up to Rocky Point Recreational Area. Buses from schools, nursing homes and community centers filled the parking lots.
Activities included a photo booth, pontoon boat rides, bouncy castles, music, food and drink, and a special appearance from Bobber the Water Safety dog.
"Special Day for Special People began in 1977 with a small gathering of people with special needs for a picnic. It has grown over the years into what it is today.," said West Point Lake Project Operations Project Manager Jay Jamison. "This year, we have more than 800 people, and it wouldn't be possible without all the sponsors and volunteers."
Volunteers with the Corps of Engineers, Publix Supermarkets, Coca Cola, Alabama Forestry Commission, Highland Pines Marina, the City of LaGrange, Wild Animal Safari, Jackson Services, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, J&J Affordable Jumpers, Synovus Bank and City Sounds all offered their free time, equipment, and services to make the event possible.
West Point park ranger Mike Linville said it is one of the project's largest and highly anticipated events of the year.
"We feel honored to be able to host this event. It allows the elderly and people with special needs the opportunity to experience outdoor recreation," said Jamison.
Special Day for Special People is held every first Thursday in October at the Rocky Point recreation area. If you'd like to volunteer next year, contact the West Point Project office at (706) 645-2937.
