WEST POINT LAKE: TEMPORARY CLOSURES OF R. SHAEFER HEARD DAY PARK, DAM ROAD, BOAT RAMPS

MOBILE, Ala. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District at West Point Lake will close R. Shaefer Heard Day Use Park, its boat launching ramps, and West Point Dam Road to all vehicular traffic April 26-28, 2019 for the 16th Annual West Point Lake Triathlon.

Here is a schedule for the upcoming weekend:

  • Evening of Friday, April 26:  R. Shaefer Heard Day Use Park Boat Launching Ramps close.

 

  • Saturday, April 27, 6:00 PM:  R. Shaefer Heard Day Use Park and West Point Dam Road close. (NOTE: Visitors are asked to vacate by 5:00 p.m.)

 

  • Sunday, April 28, 7:30 AM:  West Point Lake Triathlon begins, with anticipated ending by 1:00 p.m. (NOTE: Those who plan to attend should arrive no later than 7:00 a.m. Vehicles will not be permitted to enter the event after 7:00 a.m.)

 

  • Sunday, April 28, 2:00 PM:  West Point Dam Road, R. Shaefer Heard Day Use Park and its boat launching ramps reopen for normal use.

“Closure of the park and roadway across the dam is necessary for the safety and security of the triathlon participants,” said David Barr, supervisory park ranger at the West Point Lake Project in West Point, Georgia.

Georgia Multisports Productions will host the triathlon event at R. Shaefer Heard Day Use Park. This sporting event involves three activities: swimming, bicycling, and running. All three activities will be staged from the R. Shaefer Heard Day Use Park boat ramp area.

Visitors for recreation affected by this event may choose to use Long Cane Park on the Georgia side and/or Anderson Park on the Alabama side of the lake. Both parks offer boat launching ramps, picnic facilities, pavilions and restrooms.
