MOBILE, Ala. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District, will conduct maintenance and painting of spillway gates 5 and 6 at West Point Dam. Starting Monday, September 16, 2024, the road atop West Point Dam will be closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This closure is necessary to ensure public safety and the safety of contractors working on the spillway gates.

As part of the project, the level of West Point Lake will be gradually lowered to a target elevation of 625 feet by October 1, 2024. The maintenance work is scheduled to take place from October 1, 2024, to January 15, 2025, after which the lake level will be gradually restored to normal as conditions allow.

The road will remain closed until the maintenance is completed and all equipment is removed from the dam. The closure may affect daily commutes for motorists using the road to cross the Chattahoochee River. Alternate routes are available via the U.S. Highway 29 bridge in West Point, Georgia, and the Georgia Highway 109 bridge near LaGrange, Georgia. Signs are in place to notify the public of the road closure.
