MOBILE, Ala. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District at West Point Lake Project reminds hunters to stay safe during the 2019-2020 hunting season.
All state game laws apply to the lands and waters open to hunting on West Point Project, including hunter orange requirements and the discharge of firearms away from roads.
“We encourage the use of a fall protection harness when hunting from a tree stand,” said Chief Ranger Ben Williams at West Point Lake Project. “Also, as a reminder, all tree stands should be removed from public property when not in use.”
The largest hunting areas have hunter sign-in boards at the entrance. These areas are Maple Creek, Bird Creek, Whitetail, Stateline, Crossroads, Cater Creek, Oakland Road, and West Lake. All hunters must sign in at these areas for safety reasons. In the event that a hunter gets lost or injured, emergency personnel will be able to use the sign-in information to aide in their search and rescue efforts.
“Signing into an area doesn’t reserve it for a single hunter; however, it does allow all hunters to be aware of where others are in the woods,” said Williams. “It also gives search and rescue personnel a specific location to start looking in an emergency event.”
Signing in to “all” areas is not acceptable, as it could prolong search efforts when time is critical. Failure to sign in as required may lead to the issuance of a citation by a Corps Park Ranger.
