West Point Lake to close R. Shaefer Heard Day-Use Park, West Point Dam Road for Annual Triathlon

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, announced today that the West Point Lake Project Management Office is scheduled to close R. Shaefer Heard Day-Use Park and the road across West Point Dam to all vehicular traffic, April 21 at 6 p.m. through April 22 at 2 p.m., for the 15th Annual West Point Lake Triathlon.

Shaefer Heard Day-Use Park and the road across West Point Dam to all vehicular traffic, April 21 at 6 p.m. through April 22 at 2 p.m., for the 15th Annual West Point Lake Triathlon.

MOBILE, Ala – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, announced today that the West Point Lake Project Management Office is scheduled to close R. Shaefer Heard Day-Use Park and the road across West Point Dam to all vehicular traffic, April 21 at 6 p.m. through April 22 at 2 p.m., for the 15th Annual West Point Lake Triathlon.

Closure of the park and roadway is necessary for the safety and security of the triathlon participants. The park and road will reopen following the event.  

The R. Shaefer Heard Day-Use Park boat launch ramps, which will be used as a staging area for the event, will also close beginning Thursday, April 20, at 9 p.m. and will reopen following the event. 

The annual triathlon, hosted by Georgia Multi-sports Productions, will be held at R. Shaefer Heard Day-Use Park, April 22 from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Visitors to the Day-Use Park will be asked to vacate the area no later than April 21 at 5 p.m. so that event coordinators can prepare for the triathlon.

Spectators should plan to arrive at the park no later than 7 a.m. to secure parking, as vehicles will not be permitted into the area after that time. Volunteers will be on-site to direct visitors to designated parking areas. 

Members of the public looking for other recreation facilities during the event may choose to utilize Long Cane Park in Georgia or Anderson Park in Alabama. Both parks offer boat launching ramps, picnic facilities, pavilions and restrooms.
