Sweetwater Creek Flood Risk Management Study

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District invites media to participate in an open house at which the Corps staff will provide an update on the ongoing Sweetwater Creek Flood Risk Management Study.

WHAT: Open house at which members of the Mobile District staff will give all interested parties an update on the ongoing Sweetwater Creek Flood Risk Management Study. The open house will feature graphical displays that illustrate the various studies that are being conducted to evaluate the viability a flood risk mitigation project.

WHO: Mobile District’s Project Manager Dean Trawick and the Division Manager of the Cobb County Water System Stormwater Management Division, Bill Higgins, will be on hand to discuss the various aspects of the ongoing study.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 13 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Background: In the last 10 years, Sweetwater Creek has crested 10 feet above the channel bottom (the lowest flood stage) six times. In September 2009, an estimated 10 to 20 inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours, resulting in historic flash flooding. In addition, the flooding caused more than $500 million in property damage. More than 20,000 homes, businesses and other buildings sustained major damage.
