USACE Selma Flood Risk Management Feasibility Study Public Meeting, Accepting Public Input

Published Sept. 25, 2020

MOBILE, Ala. – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District invites the public to participate in a virtual public meeting for the Flood Risk Management Study Draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment for the Alabama River, at Selma, Ala.

The virtual public meeting will take place on Oct. 7, 2020 at 6 p.m. CST and can be accessed via the Mobile District’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/USACEMOBILE.

USACE is conducting a comprehensive engineering, economic and environmental study to determine the costs, benefits and environmental impacts of various alternatives and select a plan to manage the hazards associated with flooding and reduce the negative consequences of flooding to people and property in Selma, Alabama.

The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 (Public Law 115-123) appropriated funding for the Selma, Alabama Flood Risk Management (FRM) Study at full Federal expense. As identified under this “Supplemental Appropriation” bill, the study is subject to additional reporting requirements and is expected to be completed by October 2021 and for $3 million dollars.

USACE has developed a tentatively selected plan for a soldier pile retaining wall in downtown Selma along with a flood management plan. This plan was tentatively selected amongst an array of alternatives that were investigated including buyouts, levees, and several other bankline stabilization options. The results of the study are documented in the Draft Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment, and can be accessed for review and comment at the following website:

The Mobile District is committed to keeping the public and all interested stakeholder groups informed through public meetings, the USACE Mobile webpage and social media. The study is ongoing and we are looking for the publics input not only on the tentative plan but also for any concerns they have on achieving the goal. The decision on what, if any, plan is finally recommended will be determined by the outcome of the study.

Written comments also may be submitted to the USACE, Mobile District by mail or electronic mail by the closing of the public comment period on Oct. 16, 2020:
