Spatial Data Branch

CESAM-OP-J Spatial Data Branch

With a staff of approximately 60 personnel, the Mobile District’s Spatial Data Branch provides a broad, integrated, team-oriented capability for holistic spatial data collection, processing, analysis, development, and visualization. The branch’s engineers, physical scientists, GIS and remote sensing specialists, hydrographers, modelers, CADD technicians, developers, web designers, and technical writers are organized into four groups:

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) — GIS uses hardware, software, and data to leverage a fundamental principle of geography—that location and spatial relationships are important in people’s lives. GIS staff develop and enhance tools to capture, manage, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information, so people can view, understand, interpret, analyze, and visualize data in ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends. Simply put, GIS takes the numbers and words out of databases and spreadsheets and puts them on maps.

National Dredging Quality Management Program (DQM) — A partnership between the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the dredging industry, the National DQM Program has the mission to provide USACE dredging managers nationwide with a standardized, automated, and low-cost remote monitoring, analysis, and documentation system for USACE dredging projects. This next-generation system provides timely web-based data access, multiple reporting formats, and full technical support, including dredge certifications, data quality control, and database management.

Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Center of Expertise (JALBTCX) — JALBTCX staff perform operations, research, and development in airborne lidar bathymetry and complementary technologies to support the coastal mapping and charting requirements of the USACE, the US Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NMOC), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as well as industry and academics.

Surveying & Mapping — The Surveying & Mapping group supports the USACE and other governmental agencies—including the Department of Defense (DOD), the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Geodetic Survey (NGS), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)—with the collection, analysis, and administration of surveying and mapping data by managing contracts for both Civil Works and MILCON operations.
