Lock Information

As the operator and maintainer of locks on several major waterways in the southeast, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, is the primary point of contact when requesting to “lock through”.

The district maintains 22 locks on 4 different waterway systems including the Black Warrior & Tombigbee Rivers, the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, the Alabama River, and the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Rivers.

If you plan to travel by boat on one of these waterway systems, we recommend that you check for scheduled lock closures before you leave. Lock closures can be as short as 1 day or as long as 30 days. Most closures are planned months or years in advance, but emergencies may require closing locks to traffic at any time.

Lock Safety

Please follow the directions of the lock operator when using the locks or operating in the vicinity of the locks. Lock operator has final authority on the suitability of a craft for lockage. Neither passengers nor freight may be loaded or unloaded at locks. The order of passage through the lock is at the discretion of the lock operator. The boat arriving first usually will be locked through first, but there are exceptions. Always check our Lock Maintenance and Closure schedule before planning your trip on any of the Mobile District’s waterways. We routinely close locks for maintenance and post an updated schedule regularly to alert the public.
