Stands of hardwood, mixed forest lands and open areas harbor many species of birds and wild animals, including waterfowl,
deer, squirrels, rabbits, eagles, hawks, bobcats and dozens of species
of songbirds. The lake and its surrounding forests provide a great
locale for nature lovers to observe wildlife.
The Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge, located on the upper reaches of
Walter F. George Lake, serves as a winter sanctuary for several
thousand waterfowl migrating down the Atlantic and Mississippi
flyways. Many other species of wildlife and birds make the refuge
their home.
Hunting is allowed during designated state seasons
on specific Corps-managed areas, provided the hunter has a valid state
hunting license and Corps of Engineers hunting permit. Deer and turkey
may be taken by bow only.
For Corps hunting permits and more information on
hunting and hunting areas come by the Natural Resources Site Office in
Fort Gaines, Georgia or call 229-768-2516.
