APALACHEE WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA

Description: River Road (SR 271) provides easy access for wildlife viewing in the Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The WMA is managed by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission.  Side ponds, brimming with lily flowers and longleaf pine forests offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities all year round. The Corps of Engineers is working cooperatively with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission in establishing a long leaf pine/wiregrass education trail. A wildlife viewing platform is also planned. Work has begun in restoring 3, 700 acres of longleaf pine/wiregrass habitat. The longleaf pine/wiregrass community is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the nation. 

Wildlife: Alligators, ospreys, cormorants, anhinga, belted kingfisher, coots, wood thrush, yellow-bellied sapsucker, bald eagles, ospreys, turkey vultures, great blue herons, snowy egrets, gopher tortoises, raccoons, red fox, fox squirrels, beavers.

Directions: On US 90 west turn right at the blinking yellow light in Sneads, Florida. Follow River Road (SR 271) for about 3 miles.
