Special Activity Permits

Definition - Organized use of project resources which may occur frequently or be recurring in nature. These typically require a greater amount of management and oversight by the participants than normal recreation (i.e. safety, environmental, security), but do not require additional U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers (USACE) oversight.  They are smaller in scale than Special Events and to do not create the same hindrance to the use of project resources by the public.  Some examples of Special Activities include special hunts, baptism, academic research, small fishing tournaments (50 boats or less).

Determining Factors:

  • The event will impact the project beyond the normal use.

  • The event has a specific purpose but is limited in size and scope to an individual or small group (i.e. special hunt, small fishing tournaments, baptisms, etc.)

  • Typically a recurring activity.

  • Does not require additional USACE support of oversight.

  • It is of shorter duration and would not be practical for a lease or other agreement.

  • The event incorporates elements that may not otherwise be allowed by the regulations in Title 36, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 327; thus requiring Allatoona Lake Project Manager’s approval.

  • Any part of the activity is located outside of a licensed/leased area (i.e. marina, City Park, lease facility) or any part of it takes place on the waters of Allatoona Lake.

NOTE: For events that will occur over multiple days, there is a maximum of 15 dates allowed on a single permit.  For additional dates, you must complete an additional application and pay for and receive an additional permit.

Permit Requirements:

  • Completed permit application.

  • Signed and dated Special Activity Permit form.

  • Liability insurance certificate in the amount of $1,000,000 naming U.S. Army, Corps of Engineer, Allatoona Lake, 1138 GA Hwy Spur 20, Cartersville, GA 30121 as an additional insured.

  • Site safety plan

  • Payment of the $50 permit fee.

Permit Process

Complete and return the Allatoona Lake Special Use Permit application form at least twenty-one (21) days prior to the event. The application will be evaluated for any special conditions or additional USACE oversight that may be necessary. A package with cover letter, Special Use Permit checklist, and initial Special Use Permit form will be filled out and mailed to you for review. You must review the checklist and permit form, include all items indicated on the checklist and return the package at least ten (10) days prior to the event to the address listed at the bottom of this section. Upon receipt of your documents, USACE personnel will verify that all required items are present and correct.  The permit form will be signed by a Chief Ranger and returned to you. Failure to provide or submit the requested information outside of the requested timeframes could result in the event being delayed or cancelled.
