U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosts open house

Published June 6, 2017

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District invites the public to participate in an open house, June 13, for the proposed Sweetwater Creek Flood Risk Management Study.

The open house will be held at the Cobb County Water System Laboratory Training Room, 662 South Cobb Drive, Marietta, Ga. 30060, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Any person with an interest in the proposed flood mitigation project is welcome to attend.

In the last 10 years, Sweetwater Creek has crested 10 feet above the channel bottom (the lowest flood stage) six times. In September 2009, an estimated 10 to 20 inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours, resulting in historic flash flooding. The event set a new flood record for the area. Ten people lost their lives as a result of the flooding. In addition, the flooding caused more than $500 million in property damage. More than 20,000 homes, businesses and other buildings sustained major damage.

This open house is an opportunity for members of the public to learn more about the study and possible project. Members of the Mobile District project team along with representatives from the local sponsor, Cobb County, will be on hand with graphical displays to explain the ongoing study the Mobile District staff is conducting and to answer questions related to the study.
