Seasonal maintenance to begin at West Point Lake

Published Dec. 5, 2016

MOBILE, Ala. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that West Point Lake’s operations and maintenance contractor, East O&M, is scheduled to begin seasonal maintenance on the project Dec. 5.  The maintenance will include inspecting and repainting the boundary line around the reservoir and is expected to run throughout the winter months.

Work is set to begin at U.S. Highway 27 near New River in Heard County, and progress southward toward LaGrange, Georgia, in Troup County.  After completing approximately 66 miles of property line, the work will end at the Young’s Mill Road Bridge north of LaGrange.

Subdivisions, neighborhoods, and major roads adjacent to public land in these areas include: Point North, Grayson’s Landing, Hampton Green, Lakemont, Beaver Cove, Crossings, River Club, Eagle’s Rest, Pineland Pointe, Jandale Drive, Creek Ridge, View Pointe, and Young’s Mill Road.

East O&M employees wear fluorescent orange or yellow vests and hard hats displaying their company’s logo.  The Corps would like to make the public aware of this work so that local residents are not alarmed by their presence.

In addition, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers will be inspecting portions of the property line during the coming weeks.  Park Rangers will be in uniform.  The purpose of these inspections is to identify any encroachments on public land and to ensure the line is properly marked.

The government property line is easily recognized by two red, horizontal stripes painted on trees on either side of the line when it is straight, and three stripes painted on trees where the line turns.  The property line extends over 330 miles around West Point Lake, encompassing over 55,000 acres of publicly owned land and water.  The entire extent of the line is repainted every five years to ensure that it is easily identifiable.  For more information about this or any other matter regarding West Point Lake, please contact the Project Management Office at 706/645-2937.
